The Head Coach
In the quiet of the changing room there’s tension in the air,
The head coach sits alone, lost in silent prayer,
The team, once full of promise, now struggles in the fight,
The season’s hopes are fading, slipping slowly out of sight.
In the cold winds of November under the floodlights glare,
The head coach stands in silence, with a burden hard to bear,
The team’s form has faltered, each defeat a painful blow,
The whispers growing louder, from the boardroom to below.
The night is cold, the winds are strong, the stadium lights are bright,
Two Premier League teams clashing on a freezing Monday night,
The Magpies on the front foot, their wingers standing wide,
The Hammers block is narrow, they fight to halt the tide.
He paces on the sideline, staring at the pitch,
Hoping to find the magic to turn this losing glitch,
He wonders about his lineup, he rethinks every play,
Hoping for a miracle to chase the doubts away.
One down at the interval, fans patience growing thin,
Every formation has been tried to bring the wins back in,
The half time talk determined, he rallies one more time,
A second goal goes in the net, the finish quite sublime.
After the game he faces the press, he knows not where to start,
Questions probing for cracks within, have the players got the heart?
He talks of faith and unity, of turning it around,
But shadows of the sack loom close, a win just can’t be found.
The players lack direction, the tactics quite unclear,
And baffling team selections, departure must be near,
Behind the scenes the murmurs rise, of replacements lined in wait,
Another loss, its Arsenal next, the coach awaits his fate.
It’s going from bad to verse for Loppy …

Very amusing Geoff, well played my friend.
Not a term you hear very frequently at West ham. lol.
Very good.

I’ve been looking for alternative ways to say we need a change!

I think its blatantly obvious, to everyone, without any need at all to say it. lol

That’s brilliant. Just get rid of the Lop. Pay him off if you have to, but why should failure be at his personnal profit. When I worked, if I was not up to the job I was replaced. Bring in Terzic – how could he be worse?

I find it hard to believe he will last beyond the next two games Ken.

Well Richard, THAT I did not expect. Almost made me forget my continual dismay about WH. Well done, is the poet Laureate in your sight? ???. I just hope that the next 2 games will bring about finality with either a miraculous turnround or a change of direction with a new coach. I cannot believe that the players are ‘with’ Lope as is claimed but for Gods sake let us have a real front man who can take the reins and command respect from the squad. Despite the fact that Sully is no longer the major shareholder it is obvious that he controls things which suggests we will not be too adventurous in any future changes. Oh well, not poetry to finish with I am afraid. Regards Michael

Hi Michael
Always looking for new angles – but really just another way of saying the same thing I’ve thought for a while now – ie We need a change!

It was good to read, better than watching so far this season. I totally agree. How could he have impressed Sulli so much. The first few comments seemed good but he has so far not achieved anything except disharmony.

Spot on Michael. I never want us to lose games but a couple of defeats in the next two games, and others near the bottom picking up points and we will be in a fight and change will surely follow.
I need to work on some new rhyming!

It seems to me that he has held good jobs, at good clubs, but done nothing good at any of them.
I agree Michael, maybe he told Sullivan that he would buy young exciting players at the interview, then got near 30 yo instead, not good, didnt keep his word, even to the few youngsters he did buy.
You get what you pay for.

Hi, the thing i cannot understand is that he seems to me to be growing weaker and more inept in every press/club statement since his original arrival statement of good intent. So far as players are concerned how or why did Steidten allow us not to a strong and younger midfield? He cannot be blameless that we have ended up with the squad we have but with WH who knows what is going on behind the scenes, especially with Sully still so powerful. And i was so forward to a new and better season, i suppose after 7 decades of support i should know better!!!

Yes i agree Michael, i too was so excited this season, albeit coupled with Moyes departure, he spoke well at first, huge promises that have not been fulfilled, no pattern of play, or progression.
Our players are hugely dissapointed, frustrated even, i think thats why were seeing huge discipline issues.

Thank you Richard for those stirring and noble lines! Last charge of the bubbles, so to speak. I dread the future press conferences almost more than the games. There’s much talk of Terzic coming after Lopo, and I think the board needs to crack on with this. I suspect they may do it before the Arsenal game to avoid a slaughter before a full house.

Hi John
Thanks for your thoughts – I reckon they’ll give him two games – unless defeat at Newcastle is worse than we might expect. But who knows? You may be right – but surely they must see that a change is needed quickly.

Richard, you seem to have inspired the best performance I’ve seen this season. Afraid it has to be a poetic masterpiece before every match from now on. You can do it!

Thanks Len – I’ll give it a go!
But why haven’t we seen that level of effort from the players before now?

Beats the hell out of me. Soler looked a class act, Antonio was the best I’ve seen him for a couple of seasons, and even the Pacman looked more like the class act we all know he is. Everyone looked up for it. I guess we’re all hoping that this is the real start we’ve been waiting for, but having been a Hammer since the 50s I’m not holding my breath (not a clever thing to do at my age). I’m refusing to get optimistic about playing Arsenal! Now there’s a Hammers supporter for you.

I’ve been a supporter since the late 1950s too – we know very well – you just don’t know what you are going to get with West Ham from one season to another, from one game to another, or even from one half to the next.
